Yoga makes a splash with healthy boomers

Owner of Surfside Yoga in Mona Vale, Louise Kelly, said the demographic for yoga practisers has changed over the years.
“Our demographic tends to be a little older,” Louise told Keeping News Local. “Our 55+ clients are really consistent, dedicated, and feel the difference yoga makes to their strength, balance and flexibility. They are usually people who are active; they play golf, look after grandkids and they want to stay healthy.”
With more than 12 years experience as a yoga teacher, Louise now offers small classes in her home studio with individualised attention which she said appeals to an older clientele who prefer smaller studios to large gyms. The classes are in person and online via Zoom for people who need to workout from home.
“We focus a lot on adrenals, nervous system, for tired busy stressed people - my passion is helping people to slow down. In today’s world people really need more slowing down,” said Louise.
While yoga is suitable for everyone, Louise said many younger people are moving towards the reformer pilates trend - however, they then miss out on the spiritual side yoga has to offer as well as the peace and stillness.
“I fell in love with the practice and how transformational it can be, especially as a woman as you go through different seasons of life,” said Louise.
“The restorative side of yoga really helps me heal. Just seeing how it can empower people, get them out of their head and bring them clarity. “It makes me a better person and a better parent.”
Over at North Steyne SLSC, Isabella Frances has been leading yoga classes with a rooftop ocean view which she says is “epic”.
“Yoga isn't new to the community,”
said Isabella. “Most people have heard or tried it. But it can always feel new with different teachers and how you go through your experience with them.”
Born in the UK, Isabella has been teaching yoga since 2020 and says anyone can benefit from the practice of yoga.
“Anyone who wants to practice and share the space is welcome. Yoga supports everything we do - if you are a runner, surfer, swimmer - everyone is so active in the northern beaches.”
Isabella said yoga has improved her depth of connections with family and people.
“Yoga can support you in showing up for everyone and the people you love with more peace as well as filling up your own cup,” said Isabella.
